Newlessness - 365 Days Later!

I just wanted to give you all an update on my 2010 Newlessness challenge.

I MADE IT!!

365 Days of denying myself anything new is over! It took me about 5 days to find something I wanted to buy... it seems the experienced has turned me frugal. I can't say that it's a bad thing and I've learned so much from the experience. My advice to everyone reading is to try it for yourself. But, just in case you aren't up for the challenge (chickens), here is what I've learned:

1. I need a whole lot less than I think I need - Not making new purchases makes you realize what items are necessity, what items you really want, and what items you can do without. I can't tell you how many times I've bought something that I had no need for and it took me this experience to realize it.

2. Buying used can save you some MONEY. Okay, so I was expecting to save money by not making new purchases, and I've always been a bit of a bargain hunter. However, I didn't realize all the money you can save by buying used items. Over this year, ebay and craigslist have become my best friends!

3. There is a world of Barterers out there! You wouldn't believe how many people are willing to barter. There is a trading team on Etsy that you can trade handmade items with and I've stumbled upon barterquest.com for trading locally. I've also traded with local shop owners! You wouldn't believe who is willing to barter until you ask!

4. Awareness about waste. You wouldn't believe how much waste we would avoid if people bought more items used or skimmed down on buying new. Take wrapping paper, for example. If everyone in America wrapped just 3 presents with everyday items we all have laying around the house, we would save enough wrapping paper to cover 48,000 football fields! It's as simple as using newspaper funnies, coffee filters, brown kraft paper, fabric, etc.. to wrap a few gifts. And what a unique gift it would be!?

5. How to make cool clothes. Of course, you didn't think I would go a whole year without trying to make something did you? I've learned how to make a few fun items to wear such as a maxi dress, leggings, formal dress (that was fun), and even panties (hey, well... that's one thing you don't want to buy used..). The best part, is that everything I made fit just perfectly.

6. Newlessness is CONTAGIOUS. I have a few friends that are now inspired to go newlessness this year. What started as a shop-a-holic's protest, has turned into (hopefully) a practical awareness epidemic that inspires people to be content with what they have and mindful about what they need.

I found this gem while I was driving around town. I had to look twice because I couldn't believe it. A store front that is all about being green! This shop is filled with the most unique, eco-friendly items. Just big enough to be stocked full of all the necessities, from laundry detergent and cleaning products to lunch pails and children's toys, you'll wonder how you were able to spend so much time in such a compact place. The charming size of the Lil' Green Wagon makes it all the more eco-friendly, and gives me one more reason to love it. Marilyn, the store owner, made my experience even better. With a passion for the environment, she is working on bringing a refillable cleaning supply station to the Lil' Green Wagon so that her customers can reuse their containers and reduce waste. Brilliant!

Newlessness : Day 120

120 days.
I can't believe it.
It really doesn't seem like more than 1/3 of the year has gone by already!

I have to say, I've been able to find some pretty cool things throughout this process. I've been so excited to share this particular find with you, and I've had to be patient since it took a while to get things set up. I had been looking for a coffee table trunk (still am) and someone I met in a cute little resale boutique told me about the Habitat ReStore. Intrigued, I decided to visit one nearby in hopes I could find a trunk that would look great in my living room.

I've learned that Habitat ReStores are outlets that accept donated goods for resale that are usually donated by local businesses to help fund Habitat for Humanity. This was exciting for me because instead of these (mostly home improvement) supplies going to waste, they are being sold to help fund raising up homes in the community to those who would otherwise be unable to afford their own while doing their part to be environmentally responsible.

Well, I didn't find a trunk, but I found some really cute door frames to put in my living room and add to its charm. They were pretty big, but I managed to fit them into my little car.

Originally I had wanted to remove some or all of the glass panels and replace with mirrors and hang on the wall, however, these frames are really heavy, so I decided mounting might not be the best idea and leaning them up against the wall would be easier. My roommate had the brilliant idea to put lighting behind them! I'm not sure if I will still be adding mirror to some of the panels, but for now, it looks great and our little apartment is starting to come together!

Weakless Wednesday : Verbalize Your Thoughts

A great friend of mine inspired this week's challenge as a spinoff on the last challenge. Last challenge we talked about changing our posture to a positive one so that we might be able to more easily cultivate positive thoughts. Now that we have those positive thoughts, what do we do with them?

So many times we think such positive things about the people around us. We tend to "think" them more than we "say" them. Let's focus on verbalizing those positive thoughts this week. When you think to yourself gee, I love her style, or wow, he is very thoughtful, practice verbalizing those thoughts.

Maybe you appreciate your mother's patience. Maybe you are inspired by your brother's creativity. Maybe you think your coworker is beautiful, your best friend has the most amazing smile, or the person at the checkout counter has a kind spirit. Every positive thought this week should be spoken, no exceptions! Let's open our mouths and speak loving truth to those around us.

Sometimes I catch myself randomly frowning, sulking, thinking negatively, etc. I don't realize how much of a habit that can turn into.

This week, my challenge to you, is to not only go a whole week without frowning, but to also keep your thoughts in check. Our thoughts effect our outward posture. They effect our attitude, reactions to others and ultimately, they effect our beliefs. Let's focus, this week, on turning our negative thoughts into positive ones first... positive things are sure to follow.

Weakless Wednesday : Fill A Tummy

Some of us know what it's like to go hungry for a day, or two or three, maybe a week or a month. Some of us by choice through fasting and prayer, some because of circumstance. Some have never experienced the feeling at all and have had their needs met consistently, praise God.

For those of us who have been there, it might be a recent experience or a far removed one, but it doesn't take much to remind us of the feeling and to have a renewed empathetic spirit toward the needs of others.

I'll share a story with you. When I was in college, I was living with roommates and supported myself through school. I was on the Crew team practicing and rowing twice a day, and taking 32 units (15 is full time). My only income came from financial aid and school grants. During our spring season, I went through a really hard time since I wasn't working and I had so many classes that I had to spend all of my money on books. For three months I ate almost nothing but rice. On rare occassions I would get help from family or roommates, but I continuously struggled with pride and I hated to be a burden to others. There was one moment I remember where I was eating an apple. I finished it all the way down to the bare core so much so that it was practically falling apart. I remember thinking to myself how many apples I had wasted because I would never come close to the core. I thought to myself, 'I will never waste an apple again'. Since then, I'm sure I haven't eaten every apple so thoroughly, but it is a reminder of where I've been and how thankful I am today that I have enough to meet not only my own needs, but also the needs of others.

This week's challenge is simple. Share a meal a day with someone you know or don't know. It is the most basic need that you can help someone meet and it is simply priceless.

Here are some ideas:

Visit the places where the homeless frequent. You will always find someone in need of a meal.

Share a meal with a neighbor in need.

Visit an elderly home or help deliver meals to the elderly.

Pay for the person behind you in a drive through. This could make someone's day.

Pack an extra lunch and send it off with your child. They can share lunch with someone at school that might be in need.

Call a nearby college and get in contact with a coach. Deliver a box of food to them and let them direct it to an athlete in need. (Trust me, there will be someone who needs it.)

Bring some extra fruit to work and share a healthy snack with a few coworkers.

Offer to buy groceries for the person behind you or in front of you in line at the supermarket.

These are just a few ideas to get you started. There are countless ways to share a meal with those around you. Let's work together this week to feed our communities. I'd like to challenge you to do this daily this week. Let's try not to miss one day! It could mean someone goes without a meal. Weakless Wednesday : Complainless

Sometimes I forget how truly blessed I am and that, compared to the rest of the world, I am "rich" in the truest sense. I find myself still complaining about things when they don't go my way, wishing for what I don't have, and worrying about the unknown future. I complain that I don't have a lot of clothes when I can't find something to wear, I complain that my car doesn't accelerate fast enough, I complain that I desperately need a hair cut, and new shoes, and that I don't have enough money to enjoy a vacation, or a nice dinner. I complain that I don't have enough time to do what I love, and that my internet connection is too slow.

What I fail to remember are some things I heard about in Rob Bell's Nooma video "Rich".

And that is that I'm part of just eight percent of the world that even owns a vehicle. A staggering 92% of the world does not own a car at all. I am rich.

Somewhere around one billion people in the world do not have clean water. I can go to the sink and fill up my glass with water if I'm thirsty. I am rich.

About 800 million people won't enjoy a meal at all today and every couple seconds someone dies from hunger. I can't decide where I want to go to lunch today. I am rich.

Over one billion people in the world live on less than one dollar a day. I have that amount in change at the bottom of my purse. I am rich.

Lastly, to give the gift of water, and basic health and nutrition to the entire world, it would cost about 20 billion dollars. 20 billion dollars is what Americans spend per year on ice cream alone.

My challenge to you this week is to go this entire week without complaining once. Remember these small facts when you get the urge to complain about something you lack, a situation you are in, a job you don't like, or just not having "enough". Let us not only keep from complaining this week, but rejoice and celebrate in what we have and all of the simple enjoyments we've been blessed with! After all, you are so so rich.

Weakless Wednesday Challenge : A Letter a Day

This week your Weakless Wednesday challenge is to write a letter a day to someone you love, like or even someone you can't stand or don't know. Write one letter everyday this week starting today.

Remind your mother how much you love her, write to your husband or wife and express your deepest feelings, reach out to your brother or sister and express forgiveness, give encouragement to a prisoner and share God's love and word, send kind words to children at an orphanage, or remind your best friend of fond memories you both share. Whoever and wherever you decide to send your letter, make sure you write it and send it each and every day. Don't wait until the next day to send it. Send it that same day so that you don't forget and it doesn't end up lost in piles of paper. Go to the grocery store and buy a pack of stamps so that you are prepared.

Sometimes in this world of emails, facebook, myspace, phones and text messages, we forget what a pleasure it is to receive a hand-written letter in the mail. Something other than bills, junk, coupons and advertisements. Something someone had to spend the time to write, postage and send off in the mail to brighten our day. Brighten someone's day every day this week! I would love to hear about your letters and responses.

Newlessness : Day 66

Have you ever heard of a Clothing Swap? I've been planning this one ever since I knew I would be going newlessness for the year. A group of girlfriends get together, bring unwanted (yet wearable) clothing, set it up around tables and chairs, and then we shop. Whatever is left over gets donated to a women's shelter in the area. It is so much fun, we all get some great "new" things and get to help out less fortunate women. I will be planning several more before the year is up.

Weakless Wednesday Challenge : A New Face

This is the first in my new Weakless Wednesday Challenges. The more and more I blog about my Newlessness year, the more I've been thinking about challenging my readers to join me in doing something against the social norm, to help us remember that we are not all bound by the chains of cultural expectation. I'd like you to join my in a challenge that encourages self-reflection and makes us ask ourselves why we don't deny those chains more often.

The challenges are not for an entire year, rather, just one week. One week of going without doing something you possibly do every day, or one week doing something you don't typically do. These weeks are meant to challenge our practices, habits, and remind us that our decisions shape who we are, who we become, and who our children follow after. Each challenge will be different for everyone, more difficult for some, less for others. As the weeks go by, I hope you challenge yourself in ways you didn't think possible and are encouraged by the newfound freedom as the chains are lifted.

Since this is the first in the series of challenges, I thought it would be fitting to strip ourselves down and take a good hard look at who we really are. This challenge will be for the women readers (don't worry, guys, I'll have something else for you soon).

This week's Weakless Wednesday Challenge is to go Makeupless. That's right, an entire week without one smidgen of makeup on that beautiful God-given face of yours. This one will be tough for a lot of you, and you may have even stopped reading by now. But for those of you who are still intrigued, yet doubtful, just ask yourself why you hesitate. Why would it be so hard to go just one week with our real faces out in the world, with no powder, no mascara, no nothing except our beautiful glowing skin? Now rise to the challenge and just do it. Break through those societal chains! And know that you're not alone, I will be going through the same challenge along with my readers. If you need some encouragement, just read the comments on this post and we will get through it together!

I will say, if you decide to embark on this week long journey, do not make exceptions for yourself! If you have a date, or an event, go without makeup wherever you go, whatever your plans or occasion to truly be liberated in the experience. And don't forget to come back and post your progress!

I just found a great website today called BarterQuest. The concept is simple, and quite frankly, I wish I'd have thought of it. It is a website where you can register and barter goods or services all in one community! Brilliant. Now, not only can I go shopping, but I can also offer a service to someone else in need. I wonder if someone will trade a vacuum for some soap.

Today's Prayer Walk

I went for a prayer walk today and had a heart to heart with God. I've decided to get out of the house is the best way to have time to talk to God without being distracted with my business, the computer, the phone, to-do lists, and whatever else I get drawn to when I'm inside. It was a beautiful walk and I feel closest to God when I'm outside enjoying His creation. The dominating theme for my prayer this morning happened to be about obedience. I long to be the person to do the things God calls me to do every day. I want to be the type of Christian that doesn't hesitate to answer the call. I want to be the type of Christian that lives out my walk with Jesus. So I passed some trash on the side of the road and had the urge to pick it up. I walked past it and realized that it was that urge, that conviction, that is so easy to ignore. I turned around and walked back to the trash and picked it up. I picked up every piece of trash I saw on my way back home. I thank God for revealing my heart today and for testing my obedience. Practicing being obedient with something as small as picking up trash is what will help me have an attitude that doesn't hesitate when He calls me to do something for Him and to further the Kingdom.

Newlessness : Day 48

I desperately need a vacuum. The one I had broke down on me and my apartment is slowly accumulating little masses of lint and specks of the unknown in forgotten corners. I was about to run out to the hardware store when I remembered. Not buying anything new can be downright annoying at times. But then I think about the piles of plastic, unwanted vacuums sitting in a landfill somewhere and my attitude slowly melts from annoyance into satisfaction. The satisfaction of sacrificing the easy, time-saving convenience of stopping by the store for the greater good of reducing my carbon footprint.

While I was contemplating where to get a used vacuum, I decided to do some research on how to recycle my old vacuum. I found a few useful tips:

1. When your vacuum breaks, try to fix it before disposing of it. Often times it just needs a new part and you can save it by taking it to your nearest appliance repair shop.

2. If your vacuum is beyond fixing, you can still do your part! The outer shell of the vacuum is recyclable. The motor is not recyclable, however, it can be properly disposed of by taking it to the nearest recycling center to keep toxins away from groundwater sources.

3. Lastly, if your vacuum is not broken, and you are looking to upgrade, consider donating the vacuum to charity, a local thrift shop, or .... ME! Cause I really need one!!

How to Design and Make Your Very Own Stamp : A Tutorial

Supplies:
design to make into a stamp
tracing paper
pencil
spoon or popsicle stick (to transfer design onto rubber)
stamp carving rubber (firm rubber will last longer, but I like the soft rubber for better details)
linoleum cutting tools/wood cutting tools/exacto knife
ink pad
something to stamp your design on

**Note on supplies**: I get most of my supplies at chain craft stores. Check with the rubber stamps, screen printing, and even wood carving supplies. There are also a number of online stores that sell rubber and carving tools, which are the two hardest items to find at the large chain craft stores.

Step 1: Pick a design to turn into a rubber stamp. You can draw your design or use a photo or image you already have. Just remember that the smaller you want your stamp to be, the harder it will be to get clear and crisp details. For bigger stamps, details are great, but will take more patience.

Step 2: Trace your design onto tracing paper using the pencil. If you’re going to make a stamp with words, your design should look just like you want the finished stamp to look. When you transfer the traced image onto the stamp, the words will be a mirror image, so the stamp will end up looking right.

Step 3: Position your traced image (pencil side toward the rubber) on a piece of rubber that will fit the entire design plus a little extra room. Transfer the image from the tracing paper onto the rubber using the spoon or popsicle stick. Be careful not to move the tracing paper while you are rubbing the design onto the rubber.

Step 4: Cut the design from the rest of the block of rubber. Stay close to the design, but leave a little border so your stamp will have stronger edges.

Step 5: Using your cutting tools or exacto knife, begin taking out the largest chunks of rubber. I like to work from the least detailed parts to most the detailed parts. You may have to experiment a little to get the right amount of pressure. You don’t need to take out a lot of the rubber. As long as your lines are deep enough to provide some definition, you should have a beautiful stamp. With softer rubber, you can use the tools to just scrape the rubber, which will provide texture or shadows.

Step 6: Once you have carved out your entire basic design, the real detail work begins. Stamp your design onto some scrap paper to see where you need to refine and change your rubber stamp. For my peacock feather, you can see that I wasn’t happy with the way my edges looked the first time I stamped it on paper. I went back to make the edges of the feather thinner and more angled. You will probably have to do this step a couple of times so you can get out any last bits of rubber that you don’t want in your design.

Step 7: Use your stamp! I like to make note cards and gift tags, but you could also use your stamp for address labels, pillow cases or t-shirts (using fabric inks), or even give away your hand-carved rubber stamps as gifts.

How did come to be?
Sunshine Speckles was a joint effort between me and the existing Etsy shop names. My first name (Sunshine and Roses) was taken already, but Sunshine Speckles has really grown on me now, and I’m happy I have the name. The name makes me think of all of the things in life that provide simple pleasures – the specks of sunshine scattered throughout the day.

What inspired you to make your handmade items?
My friend Stacey taught me how to carve rubber stamps, and I needed an outlet for the growing pile of stamps and cards that was building at my house. I’m a big card writer, but even I can’t use as many cards as I make for my Etsy shop.

What does your work space look like?
I do all my crafting at home, so my work spaces changes day-by-day. I have a big rolling cart that holds most of my supplies and I drag it across the apartment to where I want to work. Today, I’m working on envelopes at my dining room table, so I have all of my envelope supplies spread across the table in various stages of the transformation from flat sheets of card stock to envelopes.

Tell us a little about you!
I graduated from law school in May, and I’m still in the midst of my job search. This was a really great time in my life to start an Etsy shop since I have so much free time to devote to making stamps, stamping cards, making envelopes, and refining my limited photography skills. By the time I have a full-time day job, I think I will have my process down well enough that my shop can be a good part-time job. I spend my days making cards with my two little dogs and my evenings with my partner. I also love to crochet, read books about dystopias, and bake.

Who has been your closest supporter?
I think a lot of my friends have been really supportive, especially my friend Stacey who is always very encouraging when I want to up new crafts. She even gives me lessons in the many crafts she enjoys. My dogs are also very supportive of me being at home with them every day.

What is your next goal?
I have a few things on my crafting to-do list. I thought up a few variations on red velvet cake that I want to try. I want to make handmade paper. I’ve been playing around with making sugar scrubs for myself, and I love the results so far. I also started looking into soap making. I’m currently trying to learn to read crochet patterns, but that’s just for me, not for my shop.

Where do you see Sunshine Speckles in the next 5 years?
I’m a very ambitious multi-tasker. In five years, I plan for my shop to have a steady stream of purchasers. I’m already looking into selling my cards in some local shops. I’ve also been toying around with the idea of opening a second shop for body products.

Tell us a little-known-fact about you!
My dream job is to work in a bakery. I would love to work at Back in the Day Bakery in Savannah, GA. It’s five hours from my house, but I try to center any weekend vacations around Savannah, so I can get one of their fantastic cupcakes.

Vindemia Olive Oil

When we were finished with the hot air balloon ride, we had breakfast at the place we had departed originally, a private vineyard in the middle of Temecula wine country. The breakfast was amazing. The place is a family run business where David will make you feel like your home. They also had tall bottles of Olive Oil out for sale and I couldn't resist - I bought two. One of these gems will make it into my kitchen and the other, well, that is going to be made into a small exclusive batch of Castile Soap. I will have a few bars posted on my website when they are all done curing. In the mean time, I must thank Dave and Gayle at California Dreamin' for making our anniversary so special and so warm.

Newlessness : Day 31

The first month of my REsolution is over! I must admit, 31 days without buying one thing brand new... I'm pretty impressed with myself. Seriously, though, God is right here with me every step of the way. I wouldn't have been able to do it without leaning on Him.

I realized I had a dilemma this morning. Today, the new GreenCraft Magazine by Stampington is on the shelves and begging my attention. I thought, Oh great. I have to find this used, but how do I do that when it just came out? The answer is one that I don't like. I either wait or pay a fortune. Right? Wrong! A few minutes later, I remembered that my business supplies aren't subjected to my resolution rules! I was so happy, I started jumping up and down. I wondered if that was cheating for just a moment and then resumed my celebration. I thought, I'm just really blessed to love what I do!

Until my next epiphany, I challenge you to do what you love!

Detox : Days 2 and 3

Day two was pretty similar to day one. I was off of work that day so I brought meals for the girls at the office. The cleanse started producing "results" this day, if you know what I mean.

Day three started out pretty rough. I did the salt flush, and then another an hour later. I met up with my Dad for breakfast at Panera, only to find out that they didn't have any oatmeal. So, I go over the menu a few times (I'm indecisive as it is) and I finally decide I'll just have a whole wheat bagel. I get back in line, put in my order, and the lady behind the counter says "we don't have bagels". For those of you who don't know what Panera is, well, they sell bagels. I sit back down and look over the menu again. Finally, I just decided on the "power breakfast" with whole wheat toast and an egg white. I order again. This time the lady says "we don't do egg whites..." Seriously? I gave up and ordered the toast with egg and cheese, yolk and all.

After breakfast, things were a little shaken up, and I was pretty sure I was going to throw in the towel, but thanks to my boyfriend and his encouragement, I stuck with it. Of course, I decided to give my skin a little detox attention and pamper myself with a clay facial mask and some of my Juicy Lime Coconut Body Polish in the bath for some extra pampering. I figure I deserve it.

Day four is proving to be an interesting one already, but I'll save that for the next entry.

Detox : Day 1

Day one of the "7 day health detox" is over. I've been drinking some pretty terrifically gross concoctions, but all in all, not too bad. The detox I've chosen incorporates a lot of food, actually. I figure it would be a great one to start with since it is my first. Now, a good friend of mine passed down the recipes before I moved from North Carolina. So, don't ask me where I got this one from... I have no idea. Maybe online, maybe from a book somewhere, it's a toss up. What I do know, is that I've been feeling very energized, and I haven't even had any coffee. Those of you who know me might suddenly gasp at the comment, but to be honest, I've barely noticed.

I've also convinced my coworkers to detox with me, because... well... misery loves company.

Upon rising, we were to drink a salt flush, which is just 1 teaspoon of epsom salts dissolved in a half cup of warm water. Sounds simple, like it might remind you of gargling with salt water. Well, it tastes nothing like that and is not very fun to actually swallow. I chugged it. An hour later, chugged another. Then we had to eat one cup of whole grain cereal. I chose a 7 grain hot cereal made by Bob's Red Mill. Mmm. One of my favorite foods from Bob. So good, and so good for you. I also have his cornbread mix, but that is another blog for another day.

That tasty dish was short lived since we had to follow it up with a citrus flush. This consisted of a half cup of olive oil - yes olive oil - a half cup of grapefruit juice and a half cup of lemon juice. Thank God for the juices. I "shook vigorously" and sipped. Any attempt at chugging made me gag. One of my co-workers loved it - she's an interesting soul.

Then, we had three more delicious meals. Well, we were supposed to have 4, but it didn't quite work out that way.

Around 12 noon we had a turkey salad with cantaloupe and around 3:00 pm we were supposed to have chicken pasta with broccoli. Now, this is where the timing went wrong. I was microwaving broccoli in the kitchen at our leasing office (where we work), not really thinking about the fact that broccoli can be very aromatic. Of course the Regional Manager decided to pay a visit. So basically, we ended up spending an hour trying to drench the place in air freshener while secretly scarfing down our meal. The place smelled like a "sewer" and we didn't finish until 4:30. For dinner, since I was still full and partially traumatized from the late lunch, I had a scrambled egg white and toast, and skipped the barley soup.

Newlessness : REduce REuse REcycle REsolution

I've never quite understood the logic behind making a new year's resolution. I figure if you want to make a change in your life, why not start today? For this reason, I'm not the greatest at making or sticking to resolutions, however, this year, I had a great idea for one. I've been thinking quite a bit about my spending habits and one of my weaknesses is shopping. And then when I'm not shopping, I'm envying what other people have. Sometimes I try to convince myself that I'm just, well, admiring a cut or style and consider it research for my new shop... But, I'm not fooling anyone... not even myself. So, I've quit cold turkey. I've made a committment not to buy one new item for an entire year. I must admit, at first, I thought it was going to be a simple resolution and personal challenge. Here I am, not even one month in, and I about had an anxiety attack when I went to the mall. Okay, I might be exaggerating just a little, but it's definately harder than I thought it would ever be. Since I imagined it would be a simple resolution, I didn't think I would blog about it, but my friends convinced me otherwise as soon as I confessed my struggles with this challenge. I just never thought about how many new things I buy on a daily basis.

Now, you might be thinking you can't buy everything used. Well, you're right. I've made a few exceptions to my challenge, such as food, some toiletries and business supplies. However, I've found ways in even those categories to cut down on spending and to incorporate recycled items. My business is a great example. With Bambu Earth, I make a lot of my supplies from recycled materials, such as my handmade plantable paper labels. With Bambu Closet, most of my clothing items are made using recycled fabrics and eco-friendly fabric from other Etsy suppliers who are destashing their unwanted material. And with Bambu Studio, so far, this challenge wouldn't apply since my only supplies are my computer and my super SWEET Photoshop skills.

These categories aside, I've committed to buying only used, recycled items. So, I have to determine whether the item of my affection, sitting there on that store shelf, staring at me with shiny new packaging is something I really need, something I really really want or just something I kind of want. If, after weighing these options, I find that it is something I need or if it is something I really really want, the hunt ensues. I then have to search out ways to get it without buying it new.

My first challenge was a simple pair of jeans. I've been meaning to buy jeans for a while now. I guess if I were a bit smarter, I would have gone on a shopping spree before January first (however, refer back to the part where I mentioned that I assumed this to be a simple resolution). Okay, so jeans don't seem like they would be that difficult to find used, right? Wrong. Most people reading this probably don't have a 35'' inseam. Finding name-brand jeans, long enough for me to wear, without being altered, and that make my butt look good? It's hard enough finding those qualities in a new pair of jeans from the department store. I started browsing Craigslist and Ebay listings, and I realized I probably needed to try jeans on before commiting to the purchase. I tried to search brands of jeans that I've owned because I know how they will fit, but I just couldn't seem to find the right measurements or sizes.

After surfing the internet, I decided to go to a local thrift store. We have a great one only a few miles from my work called the Buffalo Exchange. They typically have some great stuff. If you don't mind sifting through the array of sizes and styles, this is a great avenue for buying used items. Thrift stores in general are pretty good about accepting only clothing that is in great condition and some items even still have the tag on them. Since I was on my lunch break during my visit, I couldn't spend too much time looking around, but I managed to find a few pair of jeans that seemed to be decent candidates and tried them on. One pair of Bebe jeans fit perfectly, were super long so I can even wear them with heels, and had a price tag of just $22!! These jeans easily retail for well over $100. It made me wonder why I hadn't been shopping at thrift stores all along. I've worn my "new" jeans several times already. They are my new favorite.

A bit about you: I'm a midwestern girl, born and raised. I've been making stuff for as long as I can remember. I went to art school and studied and explored all kinds of art. What made you start your business:

I would like to feature a very special shop today. I've been lucky enough to have been introduced to this shop http://www.redbracelet.etsy.com/ through the Double Shot Cafe Buy and Replace Forum on Etsy. I couldn't help but make a purchase, and, well...

I must say, this is one of the most fabulous purchases I have ever made. EVER. First of all, I get this charming eco package with stamps and writings that give it so much character already. I can't wait to open the package, but I slowly peel it back so that I can take the most pleasure in opening it. Like a little present. Inside I find a beautiful card, and two envelopes I have to open before I can get to the treasure I have been waiting for. I carefully open the first to find an envelope adorned with two red bracelet logo stickers a single thread and a single turquoise bead! "Such care in the wrapping.." I found myself saying out loud. Which made me anticipate the anxiously awaited treasure even more! Finally I slide out this bracelet that is incredibly beautiful, feminine, brilliant with color. The bracelet is soft in texture and wraps perfectly around my wrist in layers and clasps comfortably with a silver adornment. Wow. I'm impressed and I am so excited to wear it. I only wish I had them in every color so that I could wear one with every outfit! RedBracelet is such a pleasure to work with and you will not regret making a purchase from her! I have been so moved by her beautiful treasures that I've decided feature her on my blog!

How did Red Bracelet come to be?
As all good things in life are accidently, I designed and created a unique turquoise hamsa-hand necklace. One pair. For myself. For years I think that turquoise is a vital color, I have design lots of jewellery from metal and sometimes combined turquoise components. My love to this color is mostly in the jewelry field, not connected to folklore beliefs, but to fashion taste. I think this powerful color goes well with almost every color. I had all materials because I needed to add some products in a shop to get to a certain sum for credit card transactions. I took calcium, polymer clay etc. I had some stones I bought 3 years ago during a vacation abroad and used only few of them since. Crafting tools I had already. It all combined together into a wonderful, strong and unique look. Many people were asking me to make for them. I was use to such requests since more than 10 years I craft jewelry as a hobby. But, this was different. It looks like no other thing…I decided to respond and accept the orders. After few months of marketing to shops I started to get the interest of on-line marketing. This format was really cool because it suits my life-style as a career PR woman.

What inspired you to make your handmade items?

When I got married my grand mother, who came a long-long time ago from Bulgaria to Israel, put in side my bra, at the morning of the wedding day, A GARLIC! She said that it will protect me from evil-eye and will assure that only good energies are around me. That strong memory was on my top of my mind when I first created this turquoise-turquoise… which is another belief of my grandmother. This family tradition gives the concept a real meaning.

What does your work space look like?

A clean table from wood with high chair and lots of colored and clear plastic boxes to organize all of the small components inside and craft tools and materials. The room has lots of windows and air directions. I think that is what makes it easy for me to sit for hours and work. I have a place in the corner of my table for a laptop, but I try not to touch it with dirty hands.

Tell us a little bit about you!

I am a mother for 2 children. Shelly is 11 years old and Alon is 5.5 years old. We live in Tel Aviv - ISRAEL. I am 38 and well educated. My MA is in political sciences and communication. I am a co-manager in a PR firm. My husband works in a family business now, after 10 years of managing in Adidas, Israel.

Who has been your closest supporter?

My DH… my husband helps whenever he is able and willing to fill my requests for buying materials or send something when I can't. My kids are wonderful too, and tell me all the time how talented I am and how they adore my collections. Since my daughter is a trend setter and leader at school – all the girls bought necklaces.

What is your next goal?

My next goal is making my RedBracelet temple perfect – lots of work with new pics and all the time having ideas for texts and sales… I would like to set a management routine for weekly and daily activities on Etsy and to open more shops in more sites. I now build my own site and in a developing process of marketer agent in Los Angeles.

Where do you see Red Bracelet in the next 5 years?
I don’t know- it can stay the same or get really big wings. I'll go now to wear some LuckXury against evil-eye and for good luck… maybe it will lead me to a good direction, and fulfilling path. If it won't help… well… it won't harm!! Max-I will enjoy the colors.ו

Just formulated my new Spiked Egg Nog with Peppermint Candy Sticks Soap Bar. The great thing about my soap is that they don't contain any artificial fragrances or colors. They are all made with natural fragrance or essential oils from real plant/seed extracts. The colors are derived from natural herbs, spices, purees, seeds, beans, etc.

How to Make Paper: An Easy Picture Tutorial

Lets get right down to it. You want to try your hand at making your very own paper. Sounds complicated, but it is quite simple. You need paper to make paper. The kind of paper you use will determine the kind of paper you get, and you can get pretty creative with it.

::STEP 1::

Supplies

Wood frame (you can use an old picture frame)

Fiberglass screen

Staple gun

These items can be found at Home Depot.

Just stretch the screen tightly over the frame and staple into place with the staple gun. (Watch your fingers!)

Deep tub or plastic basin like this:

It must be larger than your frame so that your frame

may be totally submerged.

I used a cement mixing tub that I got from home depot for a few dollars. It works perfect and fits the larger 12x12 frames.

Blender:

(I used a margarita blender.. you DON'T need the pour spout, mine just happens to have one.)

Scrap paper:

Any kind of paper will work for this, I usually mix up what I have in my scrap paper stash. Old bills, letters, scraps from crafts, magazines, tissue paper, construction paper, napkins, you name it.

For thick paper use postcards, old greeting cards, advertisements, etc.

I usually use a mix of both for a medium stock paper. I use this for my soap labels.

Paper Shredder:

(This is not mandatory but it makes the process loads easier. You can rip up the paper by hand if you don't have one.)

A few last supplies include:

Sponge

Fleece, flannel or felt fabric

Liquid starch (optional)

Hand and body towels

Newspaper or brown paper

Additives: Flower petals, colored thread, seeds (for plantable paper), herbs (for coloring), etc.

::STEP 2::

Process

Okay, now you are ready to start making paper!

First, shred or rip your paper:

Fill the blender half way with your shredded or ripped paper:

Fill the blender the rest of the way with warm water to soften the paper:

Pulse mixture slowly at first and then increase speed. Blend until the paper is pure pulp. If there are still paper scraps and pieces, blend longer. This usually takes about one minute or less:

Fill basin or tub half way with water. Then pour pulp into basin. Repeat as needed until you get the desired amount of paper pulp. The more pulp, the thicker your paper will be. I usually use about 2-3 batches of pulp. Add 2 teaspoons of liquid starch to mixture (this is optional but it will prevent ink from bleeding if you plan on using the paper to write on). Stir mixture to evenly disperse:

Slide prepared screen mold into basin and immerse completely. Let paper settle over screen, making sure the paper pulp settles as evenly as possible:

Once it is the thickness you would like it, lift frame up out of the water (I set mine on the corner of the basin) and then you can add botanicals, colored thread, leaves, or pretty much anything else. Get creative! You can also add these to the basin when you are pouring your pulp, but I like to add it once the paper is on the screen so that I can use the left over in the basin for a different decoration or style:

Transfer mold (screen down) onto the fabric of your choice:

Fold fabric over top of paper:

Press firmly to remove excess water:

Turn over mold, carefully, not too loosely:

Lift off screen side fabric, which should now be on top:

Sponge screen side to soak up water until the paper releases from screen:

Cover paper with towel to soak up as much excess water as possible:

Slowly lift paper on towel. Curl over with your hand under the paper while lifting so that it doesn't fall and tear. Stack onto other towels. I had made several other sheets prior and I continue to stack them on top of each other with layers of towels in between:

Layer towel on top so that it can soak up any excess water:

After this sits for about 30 mins, I uncover and transfer each sheet to a newspaper or brown paper to dry. Depending on the thickness, you can use a clothesline. If the paper is very fragile, I wouldn't recommend it. The newspaper is usually your safest bet:

The rest is easy, just wait for it to dry, and it is ready to use and enjoy!

Coffee Creamer Recipe with Homemade Whipped Cream

This "creamer" is actually whipped cream that tastes so good you'll forget all about the other stuff. And it is natural, without the corn syrup solids and hydrogenated oils.

Just put a dollop of this magical stuff on the top of your steaming hot coffee and watch it slowly dissolve. If your fast enough you might be able to catch a little on your lips!

Whipped Cream Recipe:

2 Tbs heavy whipping cream

1 tsp sugar

1 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp nutmeg

1/2 tsp vanilla

Combine all ingredients and whip on high until soft peaks form.

Dollop into your coffee.

So I'm always raving so much about recycled treasures, and I just have to share with you some original pieces I came across this weekend.

Recycled Arts Recipe

2 cups passion
1 cup creativity
4 Tbs resourcefulness

pinch of sensibility
beauty for garnish

Combine passion and creativity, mix thoroughly. Gently fold in resourcefulness until mixture becomes light and fluffy. Add a pinch of sensibility. Spoon into serving dish, garnish with beauty.

This recipe comes to mind when I see such ordinary, everyday things brought to life by an artistic, resourceful mind. I would love to share with you such originality:

This crazy cool little butterfly was once a grapesoda can. Now, it's holding up someone's kid's report card up on a fridge somewhere. And... It's beautiful. Imagine that.

Seriously? A little funky, a little urban, a splash of color and you have an upcycled masterpiece in no time. Or maybe a lot of time. I don't know, but I couldn't resist.

Time and time again. Ok, last pun... promise. But how adorable is this? A pop of golden color with some organza ribbon and cord resuscitates this vintage watch movement. Who knew something so forgotten could be so attention grabbing?

Rubber is one of those things that, unless it is natural rubber, isn't biodegradable. And a wallet is something most every man uses. Why not combine the concept? Kudos to palepink for such an innovative and practical approach.

So this is a double shot of goodness! And I'm not talkin' espresso. Not only is it recycled felted wool, but it is also stitched with organic cotton. And it's green to boot! Honestly, need I say more?

Easy Natural Facemask Recipe

Last chance to relax before another busy week. Try an easy homemade face mask to help relieve tension and rejuvinate your skin! I've jam packed the best ingredients for you to get the best results. You will end up with a fresh, soft complexion!

3 Tbs avocado, mashed
3 Tbs honey
1 Tbs banana, mashed
Vitamin E Capsul
1 egg

Powdered Oatmeal, to thicken *optional

Combine all ingredients until smooth paste forms. Add powdered oatmeal to thicken as needed. Apply to face in circular motions. Relax for 10-15 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water. Gently pat dry.

Ok, so I have to admit, I have a newly aquired understanding of blogging. Until this year, it had been some vague anomoly that everyone seemed to know about, except me. The best part is, I am pretty computer savvy and have been utilizing blogs without even knowing what they were. All the how-to's, tutorials, and informational tidbits that I've accumulated bookmarks of? Blogs. I've decided, blogs can be pretty useful. I'm always looking for something all-natural, handmade, eco-friendly, organic, and such to indulge my body with. When we walk into a store, we mostly find processed, refined, bleached, injected, chemical laden, goods. Most of which are made using cheap, culture exploiting labor.

I'm blessed enough to live in Southern California, where we have many alternative health stores that carry food, clothes and beauty products made with natural and safe ingredients. For those who live in areas like where I'm from (a small North Carolina town), this can be a challenge. Thankfully, more and more Americans are becoming conscious of the long-term effects of these health-harming products and are opting to look for what mother nature intended. The online market is booming with such products. You have to put a little more effort into searching for what you want, but it will be well worth it. My goal is to use this blog to make it even easier for you to find these little-known treasures.
